As we all look forward to the year-end festivities of tinsel and glitter with Christmas just around the corner, purchases and gifting heighten as a significant part of our celebrations.
But how can we make our joyous occasions come with an even more meaningful impact?
Recently, under the expertise of our crafting #Trainer, our Sustainability class participants stitched and shaped fabric pieces into unique Christmas ornaments. Their beautiful handmade creations weaved a special Christmas magic of their very own – making the celebration of a joyous occasion even more meaningful.

Why is this significant?
Did you know that in 2023 alone, out of 211,000 tonnes of textile, fabric, clothes and leather wastes generated in Singapore, only 2% (5,000 tonnes) was recycled1. To be precise, according to NEA, a massive 206,000 tonnes of textiles/leather were discarded in just one year alone.
In the era and continuing rise of #fastfashion trends, textile recycling is a critical part of reducing waste, conserving resources, and helping to minimise environmental impact – and every little bit of effort counts.

Carrying on with the spirit of #Sustainability, our participants also learned how to capture amazing photos of their creations; and with pointers on how they can set up their own Sustainability eCommerce business making use of their acquired crafting skills with the BROTHER sewing machines to sell their very own handmade crafts.
Many of us are one of the “Singaporeans (who) buy about 34 pieces of brand new apparel per year… and discard 27 pieces of previously-owned clothing each year.” 2 But, even if you are not, join us to support our vision at SIRS of making “Sustainability Everyday” a practice, and a reality.
